Certified Fire Hydrant Testing & Maintenance
Annual Fire Hydrant Flow Testing
We perform comprehensive fire flow tests to determine exactly how many Gallons Per Minute (GPM) your hydrants can provide. This isn't just a quick check—we measure static and residual pressure to ensure your system can handle a fire emergency.
Detailed Reporting: Professional data sheets for your records and the Fire Marshal.
Pressure Analysis: Measuring GPM, Static PSI, and Residual PSI.
Color Coding: We can paint hydrant caps to NFPA standards based on flow results.
Preventative Maintenance & Lubrication
A hydrant that will not open is useless. Our maintenance program includes 'exercising' the main valve, lubricating the operating nut, and cleaning the nozzle threads. We ensure that when the Fire Department arrives, they can hook up and start pumping without delay.
Cap & Thread Service: Cleaning and greasing to prevent seizing.
Leak Detection: Checking for "weeping" at the main valve or seals.
Visibility: Clearing brush and ensuring the hydrant is easily accessible.
Mechanical Repairs & Component Service
We specialize in the mechanical restoration of fire hydrants, from replacing specialized 'breakaway kits' after a vehicle collision to rebuilding the internal main valve. We ensure that every component—from the operating nut to the underground seat—is functioning perfectly so your property is never left unprotected.
Traffic Collision Repairs: We replace "breakaway" flanges and stems to restore hydrants damaged by vehicle impacts without needing to dig.
Main Valve Rebuilds: Fixing "weeping" or leaking hydrants by replacing the main rubber valve and cleaning the internal seat.
Extension & Grade Adjustments: If your hydrant is buried too deep by new mulch or soil, we install extension kits to bring it to the proper height for fire department use.
Part Replacement: We source and install OEM parts for all major brands, including Mueller, American Darling, Clow, and Kennedy.
High-Visibility Priming & Painting
Over time, sun exposure and weather can cause hydrant paint to fade, peel, and rust, making them difficult for emergency crews to locate—especially at night. We provide professional restoration services to ensure your hydrants are protected from corrosion and easily visible.
Surface Prep: We wire-brush away old peeling paint and rust to ensure a smooth, long-lasting bond.
Industrial Coatings: We use "Safety Red" high-gloss, rust-inhibitive enamel designed specifically for direct-to-metal utility use.
NFPA 291 Color Coding: We don't just paint them red. Based on our flow test results, we can paint the caps (bonnets) the correct color (Blue, Green, Orange, or Red) so firefighters know the GPM capacity at a glance.
Reflective Detailing: We can add reflective markers or stenciling for maximum visibility in low-light conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
NFPA 25 requires private fire hydrants to be inspected annually and flow-tested annually, plus inspected again after every single operation, with maintenance also done yearly to ensure they are fully functional, drain properly, and remain accessible for effective fire protection.
-
If the hydrant is on your private property or HOA common area, the property owner is responsible for maintenance, not the county
-
Hydrant exercising involves fully opening and closing the hydrant to ensure the internal stem and main valve move freely. Without regular exercising, mineral deposits can seize the valve in place, making it impossible for firefighters to open during an emergency. We include exercising as a standard part of our annual inspection.
-
Most Georgia hydrants are dry barrels, meaning water is held below the frost line to prevent freezing in winter
